Phase One

Initial Three Month Course And Showcases

Classes:

Classes take place once a week on Tuesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. Students learn how to write, perform, structure and edit a comedy act of between 3-6 minutes.

Coaching: Each student receives one-to-one coaching with the instructor as needed.
Materials: Each student receives the Stand-Up Comedy Clinic workbook and CDs. This workbook is adapted from the Stand-Up Comedy Clinic course David Granirer has taught at Langara College for the past nine years.
Warm Up Shows: After approximately three months of classes, the students do their first shows. We choose venues where we know the audience will be super supportive.
Gala Showcase: After 2-3 warm-up shows we do our Class Debut Fundraiser. This year it’s on Monday May 31st at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.
Phase Two

Ongoing Classes and Performances

Ongoing classes: Classes continue once a week in May and June, then once every two weeks in July and August and then once a week from September to November. Students hone their comedy skills, learn advanced writing techniques and interactive comedy skills, and develop a whole new set for their graduation showcase in November.

Ongoing performances: Our goal is to do as many shows as possible during the year. Usually we do between 20-30 shows at conferences, forums and treatment centers, on university and college campuses and at public events. Our goal is to spread a message of hope and empowerment, fight stigma, and show the world what people with mental illness are capable of doing.

Though we do a certain amount of pro-bono shows, students also get paid for some of the shows. Getting paid is not only nice, but it’s a great self-esteem builder and way to recognize the talent and value of our students.

Alumni Program: Once they have finished their first year, students can join the Alumni Program that meets once every two weeks. This allows them to continue writing and performing.
